Closiq Sync

Privacy

Closiq Sync has no accounts and no analytics, and it never learns what you watch.

Last updated 31 August 2026. Closiq Sync is made by Closiq Inc.

The short version

To keep two videos in step, Closiq Sync needs to send a playback position to the other person. It does that through a relay server, and that is the only thing it sends.

It does not send the address of the page you are on. Instead it sends a one-way scrambled fingerprint of it, which is only ever compared against your partner's to confirm you are both on the same video. A fingerprint cannot be turned back into a web address, so no record of your viewing exists on the server or anywhere else.

What is sent while a session is running

Room code
The six-character code, generated at random when you start a session. It is not derived from you or your device.
A session identifier
A random value created when you join and discarded when you leave. It distinguishes the two participants from each other and nothing more. It is not stored, and a new one is generated every time.
Playback state
Your position in the video in seconds, whether you are playing or paused, the playback speed, and whether you are currently buffering.
A fingerprint of the video address
A SHA-256 hash, truncated, of the normalised page address. Used only to check that both participants are on the same video. The address itself never leaves your Mac.
Timing measurements
Timestamps used to measure the delay between your Mac and the server, so positions can be compared accurately.

What is never sent

How long anything is kept

Playback messages are passed between participants and not written down. The server keeps only which participants are currently connected to a room, for as long as the room is in use. A room and everything associated with it is deleted automatically twelve hours after it goes quiet.

Settings that stay on your Mac, such as the room you last joined, are stored locally by Safari and are removed when you uninstall Closiq Sync.

The relay server

The relay runs on Cloudflare. As with any connection to any website, the network address your Mac connects from is necessarily visible to Cloudflare in order to deliver traffic, and may appear in their standard operational logs. Closiq does not record it, does not associate it with a room, and does not use it for any purpose.

Why Closiq Sync asks for access to every website

Video lives on many different sites, and Closiq Sync cannot know in advance which one you will use. Safari therefore asks for permission across websites. On any page, Closiq Sync reads and adjusts only the playback state of the video element: its position, whether it is playing, and its speed. It does not read page content, form fields, or anything you type.

Children

Closiq Sync is not directed at children and collects no personal information from anyone, including children.

Sharing

Nothing is sold, rented or shared. There are no advertisers, no analytics providers and no third-party services beyond the hosting described above.
